Ohio Criminal Convictions Pose Employment Problems

Ask anyone who has been convicted of a crime, particularly a felony, and they will likely tell you that their conviction has made it more difficult to get employment. Felons have no choice to admit to their convictions on applications and this means many are living with punishment for crimes committed long ago and long since paid for.

Whether convicted of a sex offense or theft, having to mark that box on a job application immediately makes employers think twice about hiring you, say some felons. According to Cleveland.com, a job fair in Parma designed to help ex-offenders showed just how trying it can be to get back on your feet after a conviction.

The job fair drew 850 visitors from the area, men and women who have paid their debt but still can’t get out from under the stigma that a criminal conviction presents. Fast food, construction, and financial employers showed up to interview the job seekers.

While doing time in a county jail or state prison can be very difficult, the restrictions that a criminal conviction place on your life can last long after you have been set free. From finding a job to renting an apartment, it can be very difficult to get back on your feet.

There are rehabilitative programs in some jails and prisons but just how much they help once you have re-entered the community is questionable.

If you were convicted of a drug offense, potential employers may automatically think you are more likely to be an addict or struggle with responsibility. If you were convicted of a violent crime, employers may actually be frightened of the thought of working with you.

Facing criminal charges is difficult. Dealing with the repercussions, however, is even harder.

If you can avoid a criminal conviction on your record, you are in a much better place to move on with your life after the court proceedings are over. The best time to fight a conviction is before you plead guilty!

Depending on the circumstances of your case, we may be able to help you get through the system without a conviction. In order to make a fair evaluation of your case, however, I need to hear from you.

Call today to discuss your case and what brought you to this point. If given the opportunity I will tirelessly defend your name and do my best to get you positive results in court.
