Too often the general public has a very narrow view of what the laws encompass. This story is a good example of domestic violence reaching far beyond husband and wife situations.

Fifty two year old Sami Troni is facing charges of domestic violence for punching his brother Fahri Troni. The incident occurred on November 23^rd when Fahri arrived at Sami’s restaurant, Troni’s Pizza and Restaurant, to pick up a family member.

It isn’t clear what started the argument but a punch ended it when Sami allegedly hit Fahri with a closed fist in the face. Fahri called the police at that point who found him with a bruised head when they arrived at the scene.

Sami was arrested and charged with domestic violence. He has since been released on bond and recently entered a not guilty plea according to the Dayton Daily News. As with most if not all such cases, a temporary protection order was immediately issued after the incident.

The simple fact that both men are restaurant owners leads me to wonder if this isn’t a business related feud, but that fact simply isn’t known at this point.

Domestic violence is a serious charge and can apply to all sorts of relationships. You don’t have to be married to someone for a domestic violence charge to stick. As a matter of face, domestic violence charges even apply in situations of roommates, relatives by marriage, and even aunts and uncles.

Although the news report doesn’t mention the exact charge that Sami is facing, it is likely a Class I misdemeanor domestic violence charge. This applies where the incident results in injury. It carries a potential 6 month jail sentence as well as fines.

Domestic violence charges are usually the result of an emotionally charged situation. When we fight with family members or those close to us, the emotion runs deep. This is one reason these cases can be particularly difficult for all parties involved.
